We built Cushion after watching sudden layoffs blindside high-performing friends and colleagues - these were talented professionals who did everything right, yet were left exposed by sudden boardroom decisions. It became painfully clear that traditional safety nets have failed to keep pace with the modern cost of living. We knew we had to step in to create a better standard. Cushion exists to give professionals control by providing a private, dependable financial buffer for modern lifestyles.
The Origin Story
The concept for Cushion wasn’t born in a boardroom; it came from watching the devastating reality unfold for some of our closest friends. We saw successful professionals who had established stable lives for their households abruptly lose their income.
The true crisis was not the job loss itself, but the sobering financial reality that became clear upon applying for state assistance. It quickly became evident that state unemployment benefits were inadequate for maintaining their basic financial commitments.
We saw firsthand the resulting domestic strain, financial pressure, and difficulty of securing a new role, forcing some to consider lower-level positions simply to find an income they could survive on.
With corporate loyalty out the window, and governments lacking the funding to remedy the situation, it became clear that a private-market alternative was necessary to establish a better way forward.
We designed Cushion to give proactive professionals private income protection from corporate instability, allowing them to navigate career transitions on their own terms.
